Puget
Sound is an immense inland salt waterway located in
the Pacific Northwest. At its most southern point is Thurston
County. Olympia, the county seat and the capitol city of Washington,
is the Gateway to Puget Sound! The south sound area offers
spectacular views of Mt. Rainier to the east, and the rugged
Olympic Mountains to the northwest.
THE
WATER: The unique geography of the South Puget Sound
area, with its series of peninsulas, offers some of the most
extensive, sheltered marine shorelines available in the northwest.
Unlike the ocean, the salt waters of South Sound are generally
very calm. Like the ocean, you get the benefits of daily
tidal changes and variety of birds and marine life. Watch
Bald Eagles and Blue Herons soar and fish and seals, sea
lions, whales, and otters play. These miles and miles of
uncrowded waterways are perfect for sail or power boating,
kayaking, canoeing, skiing, bird watching and fishing. It
is also a great area to explore with an abundance of day-trip
destinations. For those who prefer fresh water activities,
there are a number of various sized lakes in Thurston County
offering both fishing and water skiing. Unique compared to
many parts of this country, you can actually own your beach!
Most waterfront parcels are considered private and the beaches
are not open to the public.
THE
LOCATION: This is a very convenient location! Approximately
half way between Seattle and Portland, with easy access to
Interstate 5, there is very little traffic congestion. Sea-Tac
International airport is only 45 minutes away. There is also
snow skiing, ocean beach and fishing activities, and even
mountain climbing near-by. With only about 210,000 people
living in Thurston County, the area has a lot of "city" amenities
such as shopping malls, fine restaurants, regional health
care facilities, PGA level golf courses, and cultural events.
However, the crime rate is quite low, the employment in the
area is very stable and many parts of the county retain a
rural feel.
TYPES
OF PROPERTIES AVAILABLE: South Puget Sound has just
about anything someone could want. Starter homes are in the
$100,000 to $150,000 range; with upper end luxury/waterfront
homes in the $1 to $5 million range. There are cute, turn
of the century bungalows, very nice new and older sub-divisions
near town, condos, golf course communities, retirement communities,
fresh and saltwater front homes and homes with views of the
mountains and water. The area also has both "working" and "gentleman" farms
and ranches.
